When the summer is slow, we make more than ice.
Some people read books, some people hike, what do we do for fun when work is slow? We grow watermelons…..BIG watermelons! For the 4th year, we planted and harvested a blue ribbon Carolina Cross watermelon weighing just shy of 180lbs. And, that’s small for a prize winning watermelon.
This year, our melon took the blue ribbon at the NC State Fair for biggest this season. In 2011, at 282 lbs, our entry became the new NC state record and was the largest watermelon grown that year world-wide, 9lbs shy of a world record. Imagine carrying that home with your groceries! But giant watermelons are not good for eating.
Now that the watermelon season is ending, we are gearing up for an incredibly busy fall. Obviously event planners and caterers didn’t take a summer vacation. They were busy planning our next projects. We love that!
And, even though we can’t talk about it now, keep watching for our late fall picture posting of some very cool jobs we are planning now. As you can tell, we enjoy a challenge.
P.S. If you’re interested in more watermelon press, here are a few articles about this year’s contest.
